Bees! Bees! Bees!

Just a  quick update on our bees. The bees arrived about a month ago. I had purchased a nuc instead of a package for a couple of reasons. Package bees come in a box, with a queen, and you dump them into your hive box and let them go to work.  Nuc’s are five frames of already built comb, with some honey and baby bees, all raring to go. It’s a jumpstart on the whole process. Being that 1) I don’t really know what I’m doing and 2) to put it as the Starks say, “Winter is coming,” I wanted to make sure the colony has plenty of time to get good and strong before the season is over.

I have two hives. Green hive and blue hive.  It’s amazing how big boxes of bugs can be so vastly different.  Green hive is WAAAYY more aggressive. They’re constantly swarming around my head and hands while I’m inspecting. It’s also the hive where I saw two queens. (not completely unheard of, evidently. Sometimes a mother / daughter pair lays together. It’s rare, but not a freakshow…)

Blue hive are, of course, my favorite because they happily buzz along while i’m in there inspecting hives. Green dive-bombs me…

And honestly, I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m happy to just be learning. If I can manage to keep the bees alive until 2014, that would be all I could ask for.

Well, that and a couple jars of honey. Just saying…
